Registration Dates!

ESL at Athens Drive opens for registration soon! We hope to see you there! Here are the dates that you can come to register and take a test to begin class:

January 6, 2010

January 7, 2010

February 8, 2010

March 1, 2010

-If you do not come on one of these dates, you will not be able to register for the Spring Semester ESL program.

-Please come at 6:30pm or as early as possible to ensure that there is time to give you a test and fill out the registration paperwork.

-Regular classes begin on January 11.

-The Crossroads Cafe is a new ESL program for levels 4, 5, and 6 that involves independent work watching videos in English, and one-on-one work with an instructor each week to help you. This class would be in addition to your regular ESL class. Come on January 13 to learn more about this program.

-We are also offering Citizenship Classes beginning next semester! The first day of Citizenship classes will be on January 25. We will offer these classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

-Students must be able to commit to attending class at least 3 out of 4 days each week! We want you to learn a lot of English in our program. Realistically, it is very difficult to make significant advances in a language if you only attend class once or twice a week. To learn English, you must be able to practice everyday for a long period of time, both inside and outside of class.

Holiday Songs!

You hear them everywhere, in every store that you go to from now until New Years Eve. Do you want to know the lyrics of these songs? If so, you can click on the links to the right, under "Holiday Songs", and listen to the songs with lyrics to help you understand them. The songs are listed in order from easiest to most difficult. If you have any requests, place a comment, and I would be happy to find and add the song to the list!

Happy Holidays, and I hope you enjoy the music!

Do you like music?

If the answer is yes, click on the songs to the right of the screen!

The songs are listed under each level, so that you will hear grammar and vocabulary from class. All of the songs have lyrics, so that you can read while you listen.

Listening to music in English is a great way to improve your listening comprehension, reading comprehension, tone, and rhythm in English. Listen to the same songs again and again, until you can memorize the words and sing along.

Teachers and students, if you have a favorite song in English, add a comment with the name of the singer and/or the song that you want to listen to. I will try to find the song with lyrics on U-Tube and add it to the lists!

Student Stories

Dear Students,

This is your community. We want to hear your stories.

Many of our friends are searching for work in a new country. Please write to tell us about your experiences in looking for a job. How did you find your first job in the United States? Did you find work through friends, through the newspapers, through the internet? Was it easy or difficult? Are you looking for work, now? To tell us your stories, click comment. Remember, your experiences can help other students to get ideas!

Teachers, we want to hear your stories, too. How did you get your first job in the United States?
